If your firearm's licence has expired and you still have the firearm, you may apply for a new licence for it. Unlike the 2020 and 2021 amnesties, it does not have to be surrendered.
The practical route
- Renew your SAPS competency for the relevant category first (unless you already hold a valid one).
- Lodge a full new-licence application at your DFO (SAPS 271, motivation, supporting documents) and present the firearm for a Certificate of Verification.
- Store the firearm - unused - in your safekeeping facilities until the new licence is issued.
Keep the Verification Certificate and the SAPS payment receipt in the safe with the firearm they relate to.
