Where the motivation fits
Getting licensed in South Africa runs on four pillars - competency, the licence, safekeeping, and the rules of ownership. The motivation is what turns your application into a case the Registrar can grant.
Competency first
Pass your PFTC training for each firearm category plus the law module, then apply to SAPS for your competency certificate at your DFO. It's the gate before any licence, and takes roughly 3 to 5 months.
Choose your section
Self-defence (s13), occasional sport & hunting (s15), or dedicated (s16). The section sets which firearms you may hold, and for how long.
Motivate & apply
Your SAPS 271, your motivation and supporting documents go to your DFO. This is where Motivus does the heavy lifting - and where a strong motivation decides the outcome.
The wait
Applications are approved in the ordinary course within about 90 business days, then the licence is printed and delivered to your DFO for collection.

What comes first - competency or the licence?
Competency. You must hold SAPS competency for the firearm category before you may apply for a licence to possess a firearm.
How long does the whole process take?
Competency takes roughly 3 to 5 months; a licence application is then approved in the ordinary course within about 90 business days, plus a few weeks for printing and delivery.
